Xena had been gone ALL day - AGAIN!
Why did this happen on such a regular basis? She was quite capable of looking after herself. She wasn't a baby any more, hadn't been for years. Why, even her own mother had treated her better from a much earlier age and she had hardly been a baby when they first met. Oh my, that had been some meeting too!
Tossing the blond hair from her eyes she regarded the golden tan on her strong, lithe frame. Didn't Xena find her attractive any more? Is that why she keeps going off like this? No, it's wasn't that. Xena still paid her as much attention as she ever had. So what was taking so long? She huffed her discontent.
She strolled across the meadow, casting her gaze this way and that, trying to find some distraction to relieve her boredom. This was all too much. She stamped her foot in frustration. Idly picking at a daisy here and a buttercup there, she mused on what Xena was up to now. Off battling some stinky warlord most likely or maybe ensconced in a tavern, drinking her friends under the table. Surely she could help with that couldn't she? Well, maybe not the drinking under the table bit but she could help with the warlord; you know, beat him up a bit, give him a good kicking just like Xena does.
Her meandering path took her down to a shallow brook that babbled gently between the trees in a rocky dell. She gazed at her reflection in a still pool then bent forward to take a drink. She kicked her feet in the water, sending rainbow cascades of droplets that stippled the sun baked rocks embedded in a small sand bar; throwing her head back in sheer devilment of performing such a childish act. Well, if Xena insisted on leaving her behind it was small wonder that she behaved in such a frivolous manner.
Wandering back up the hillside, into the sunshine once more, she lay down in the warm grass and rolled on to her back, sniffing in the wonderful scents of the sweet meadow flowers. She lay on her side basking in the heat of the summer afternoon. Idle thoughts of what was detaining her friend soon became thoughts of how she could pay her back for making her wait so long. Maybe it could be as simple as pushing her into the stream. No, that would be too easy and knowing Xena as she did she would probably expect something like that. No, it had to be a bit more devious. Maybe she could…………….then again, maybe not. Or she could……………no, that was not a good idea either. It was tiring work trying to think of a way to pay her friend back and the warmth of the sun was making her drowsy. A few minutes later she had dozed off.
Her nose wrinkled suddenly. Fish! Xena! So that's where she's been all this time. Jumping up quickly and calling a shrill welcome, she trotted over to her friend who walked towards her, smiling, the young blond bard at her side.
